Strep throat is a type of bacterial infection that accounts for a small number of cases of sore throats. This condition is more common in children than it is in adults. If not properly diagnosed and treated, strep throat can lead to serious complications, including kidney inflammation or rheumatic fever.

Signs and Symptoms

What are the signs and symptoms of pediatric strep throat?

  • Body aches

  • Fever

  • Headache 

  • Nausea or vomiting 

  • Pain when swallowing

  • Rash

  • Red, swollen tonsils

  • Sudden onset throat pain

  • Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the child’s neck

  • Tiny red spots on the back of the roof of the mouth

  • White patches on the tonsils

Causes

What are the causes of pediatric strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by being infected with the contagious bacteria streptococcus (group A streptococcus). This bacteria is easily transmitted by being in close proximity with someone who has strep throat. The virus can be transmitted when the infected person coughs or sneezes.

You can also transmit the virus by sharing drinks or eating utensils with someone who has strep throat.
