Bleeding Disorders Treatment Program

Bleeding disorders affect how blood clots. Some children’s blood doesn’t clot enough, which can cause problems like losing too much blood after injuries. Blood may also clot too much, which can lead to strokes and other health problems. Children’s Health℠ created a specialized Bleeding Disorders Treatment Program to provide expert care for blood disorders in children.

Children’s hematology care

We’re one of only a handful of centers in Texas that offers comprehensive treatments for children with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and thrombotic (clotting) disorders that cause strokes. We help your family manage these lifelong conditions so your child can thrive.

Children’s Health is the only children’s hospital in North Texas designated as a comprehensive hemophilia treatment center (HTC) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This certification underscores our deep expertise in caring for kids with hemophilia.

Specialized pediatric bleeding disorders clinics and programs

We offer pediatric bleeding disorder and clotting programs to meet all your child’s medical needs, including our:

• Bleeding Disorders Clinic: Making care more accessible and convenient for your family by offering this specialized clinic weekly in Dallas and monthly in Plano. Children with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease (VWD) and other disorders see multiple specialists and receive comprehensive care during one visit.

• Pediatric Stroke Clinic: Bringing together specialists from multiple fields to develop customized care plans that lower your child’s stroke risk or help those recovering from strokes. As a national leader in pediatric stroke care, other hospitals across the country use guidelines our doctors developed to diagnose strokes in children.

• General Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Program: Providing dedicated care for children at risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVTs) or other blood clots, as well as those recovering from strokes. We provide ongoing care for at least five years to minimize your child’s risk of future strokes.

• Young Women’s Blood Disorders Program: Helping adolescent girls and young women experiencing heavy periods or other problems like anemia often caused by bleeding disorders. Our program is the only one of its kind in North Texas.

Managing a child’s bleeding disorder can be challenging. We offer extensive resources to support your family, including:

• Camp Ailihpomeh (hemophilia spelled backwards), a weeklong summer camp for boys ages 7 to 17 who have hemophilia.

• Dental care for children with bleeding disorders through our Center for Pediatric Dentistry.

• Discount drug pricing through a federal program only available at designated comprehensive hemophilia treatment centers.

• Orthopedists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists and other experts who have experience performing procedures on children with blood disorders.

• Patient education materials to help your family manage and live with bleeding or clotting disorders.
