What are pediatric uterine fibroids?

These tumors do not increase the rise for uterine cancer. They range in size from pea size up to a softball. Many are not even large enough to be detected by a healthcare provider.

What are the different types of pediatric uterine fibroids?

There are three major types of uterine fibroids:

1. Intramural fibroids - the most common type and develope in the muscular uterine wall

2. Submucosal fibroids - these grow outside of the uterine wall into the pelvis

3. Subserosal fibroids - these develope in the muscle layer into the uterine cavity

• Abnormal bleeding (between periods)

• Frequent urination

• Heavy periods

• Lower back pain

• Pelvic pain

What are the causes of pediatric uterine fibroids?

The cause for uterine fibroids is not known.

Risk factors

• African-American heritage

• Diet (high in red meat)

• Family history

• High blood pressure

• Obesity
